Friends of Wisdom,
I hope each of us has an excellent new year that sees increases in the well-being of people world-wide.
I recently read the Global Happiness and Wellbeing Policy Report 2019, which describes efforts at several levels to focus attention and promote policies that increase well-being.
See: http://www.happinesscouncil.org/
Chapter 4 “Positive Education” and Chapter 8 “Adopting a Well-Being approach in central government…” are particularly applicable to our work.
A key question I have is:
What government policies correlate most strongly with well-being?
I have not yet found a (short) answer but can suggest some candidates.
I continue to advocate using the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a barometer of well-being, worldwide.
See: https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Assessing_Human_Rights/Beyond_Olympic_Gold
The UN Sustainable Development Goals also provide a good barometer for assessing wellbeing.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goals
The report references additional approaches.
As the US approaches the next presidential election, I plan to pose that question to leading candidates and judge their wisdom based on their responses and policy positions.
If any of you know the answer to that question, or have related insights I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks,
Lee Beaumont
