Postdoc position: Integrating Deep Learning and Semantic Information to Improve Models of Human Eye-Movements

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual for a one-year Postdoc position working at the interface between sensory neuroscience and computer vision. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to be named researcher on a planned MRC/EPSRC grant application that will follow-up on the current project, potentially providing continued employment. The project will be based at the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre and the School of Computer Science and Informatics. It will be jointly supervised by Dr Christoph Teufel (human vision), Dr Matthias Treder (machine learning/computer vision), and Dr Liz Irvine (philosophy). Ideally, the successful candidate will start towards the end of 2019, or beginning of 2020.

Salary  £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6).  It is not expected to appoint above £33,797 per annum, salary point 30.

Job Description

To conduct research within human and computer vision and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

  • To develop a computer model that captures contextual effects in human eye-movement control. This will involve working with convolutional neural networks and embeddings, or similar tools.
  • To conduct research within human and computer vision and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in high-quality scientific journals, and presenting at national and international conferences. 
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions,   explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally  to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. Qualifications and Education

  1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  1. An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:
    • Machine learning, in particular convolutional neural networks for image data using Python 
  2. Sufficient understanding of human vision to guide model development 
  3. Proven ability to publish in high-quality journals 
  4. Sufficient knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to support the development of applications to funding bodies
Communication and Team Working
  1. Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
  1. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work 
  2. Proven ability to work without close supervision.
Desirable Criteria
  1. Experience of working in a cross-disciplinary team at the interface of visual neuroscience and computer vision.
