Ruona Meyer (MDC PhD in Investigative Journalism)

Screening of her Emmy-nominated Documentary 'Sweet Sweet Codeine' followed by Q&A

From BBC News: 'Thousands of young Nigerians are addicted to codeine cough syrup - a medicine that's become a street drug. The government estimates that up to 3 million bottles of the addictive syrup are drunk every day in just two Northern states. Taken in excess, codeine can cause psychosis and organ failure. But who makes this syrup? And who sells it to Nigeria's children?'

In recognition of the UN's World Television Day, the Media Discourse Centre at De Montfort University, in collaboration with the Documentary Media Centre, has organised an event that focuses on West Africa. The Documentary Media Centre (https://docmediacentre.wordpress.com<https://webmail-ic.dmu.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=rFjx62CEVD_z9k1jmDWekenK8RmPEWRE9cmJ6m2qd4EjrpdoLGnXCA..&URL=https%3a%2f%2fhes32-ctp.trendmicro.com%3a443%2fwis%2fclicktime%2fv1%2fquery%3furl%3dhttps%253a%252f%252fdocmediacentre.wordpress.com%26umid%3d0d4ab675-fa2c-4ffb-a569-b70afa382386%26auth%3dabf3dc013bb623204479f0e1f803993cdb4617ca-51d27f6915ea5ce248f440ed9308f59d49184ad3>), based in Leicester, is an independent museum, archive & library – registered with AiM (Association of Independent Museums).

It operates along the lines of a ‘community of practice’ model:

it identifies and connects with active documentarians via the Parallel Lives project – practitioners located across Latin America, West & East Africa, South Asia, and South-East Asia.

it provides researchers, educators and students, access to this documentary media content through its museum exhibits, archive and library of documentary films, photography, audio, and new media.

it organizes ‘Doc Media for Learning’ events throughout the year.
