A., Mehrtash, H., Fawole, B., Maung, T. M., Balde, M. D., Maya, E., ... & Adeyanju, A. O. (2019). How women are treated during facility-based childbirth in four countries: a cross-sectional study with labour observations and community-based surveys. The Lancet. Funded in part by WHO, this comprehensive study prospectively recruited women 15 years or older in health facilities in Ghana, Guinea, Myanmar, and Nigeria (three per country) between 2016 and 2018. Continuous observations during labor and childbirth were performed and surveys were administered in the community to participants up to 8 weeks postpartum. In total 2016 labor observations and 2672 surveys were done. Six percent of observed labors and 4% of surveys revealed physical or verbal abuse, or stigma or discrimination. Young age and lack of education were the primary determinants of mistreatment. Please join us in discussion in the forum regarding these findings and their interpretation.
