I am delighted to announce the publication of my monograph, which might be of interest to someone in the list:

Il dolore illegittimo. Un’etnografia della sindrome fibromialgica (2019, Edizioni ETS, Pisa)
The book is based on an ethnographic research carried out in a fibromyalgia diagnosis and treatment Center located in a public hospital in central Italy. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome that affects mainly, although not exclusively, the body of women. From the biomedical perspective, the symptomatology appears unlinked to specific tissue lesions that can be found through examinations and tests; therefore, the processes of understanding, treating and legitimizing the syndrome are incomplete if they are not integrated into a broader social, cultural and political vision. The proposed anthropological analysis highlights the risks of the de-legitimizing of pain that fibromyalgia tends to favor by re-proposing the somatic simulacrum of a historical assimilation between the female body, inadequacy and discontent. Tensions, contradictions and connivance emerge between people and institutions, and between moral and social discourses that inform biomedical practices and underlie the multiple expressive forms of suffering.

The book is edited in Italian.
