Dear Laura,

Apologies for not having got this to you sooner. I am a bit inundated with work deadlines at the moment. As soon as I have some breathing space I will get back to you with details.

Subject: FWSA Mentoring Scheme - call for mentors

[EXTERNAL]

Dear colleagues,

The Feminist and Women's Studies Association, UK and Ireland (FWSA) is launching a new Mentoring Scheme to add to our collection of initiatives for our membership (book prize, student essay prize). The FWSA Mentoring Scheme aims to foster collegial relationships between members of the FWSA. The scheme is for FWSA members who have passed their PhD and are early/mid-career scholars, who will be paired with a more experienced mentor, who is able to pass on advice or share experiences. With academic work becoming ever more precarious and competitive, the aim of the mentoring scheme is to counter this environment with a collective feminist politics and a supportive environment for feminist colleagues. After the supervisory support during PhD work, guidance after this point of the academic career trajectory is often lacking, and FWSA aims to support those without institutional support or other mentorship.

We are looking for volunteers to act as a Mentor for this scheme. Mentors will receive a year's free FWSA membership. The mentor’s role is:

  * To provide confidential advice and support on career matters (in person, by email, skype or telephone). This will take place at an agreed mutually convenient time
  * Matters may include job applications, publications and research, career anxieties, academic politics, feminist mobilising in academia, teaching tips, and so on.
  * We don't expect mentors will read drafts of work, although they might be happy to do so.
  * We don’t expect mentors to write references, although they might be happy to do so.
  * The amount of contact between the mentor and mentee is flexible, although we would suggest a minimum of 4 meetings in the 12 month period.
  * Mentors are not expected to provide mentoring outside of working hours.
  * To maintain confidentiality and respect for others in the scheme.

If you would like to volunteer as a mentor please contact us [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The call for applications for mentees will open soon. We hope this scheme will be a success to support feminist colleagues and inspire more collegiate practice in our universities.

All best wishes,

Laura & Sara
