I watch this strand with interest. Two strands combine here in my mind.

 

One strand is the privilege of serving people as minister at their times of greatest need and so the sense of vocation finds fulfilment there.

 

The second strand is that as part of the NHS, I have a job there requires me to do on call as part of my contractual obligations. As chaplains we are exceedingly privileged in this respect as we have agreed pay conditions for doing on call. Agenda for change recognised that, so we are now  paid  9% for a minimum of 1 in 3 on call cover. I am assuming that most chaplains have a contract of employment and have agreed to do on call!

I guess when both those strands come together, we are immensely privileged to serve in this way and we are getting well paid for it.

 

Perhaps we need to remember that our medical colleagues do on call but do not usually get paid for it – it is simply part of their contract.

Perhaps as chaplains we should act graciously towards our colleagues who have to organise rotas and make sure they are fair and equitable for everyone.

No one likes to have their social life disrupted by on call, but that is a very different picture to parish life when 7 days a week was the name of the game!

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my email. There are obviously a variety of practices and experiences out there.

A priority I think is to make sure that our own wellbeing is protected whilst if possible making sure that chaplaincy is as available as it can be.

Dear all,

 

Just for information for you, we have two full time chaplains at my trust and one bank on call chaplain.

 

The arrangement we have is that the two full time chaplains do 3 on calls each week and the bank chaplain does 1 on call.

 

We do not provide on call cover when we are on our TOIL or holiday the other chaplain covers and then we reciprocate.

I’m  at North Linc9olnshire and Goole, based at Scunthorpe General Hospital.  We’re a small team – full complement of three full time staff across three hospital sites. We are soon going to be working as only two chaplains for the trust until our vacant post is filled.

  We offer an on call of 1 in 3 which amounts to 10 sessions per month.   How do other trusts configure their on call arrangements please? We  have no more than three nights on call in any week – those sessions never consecutive, and then two nights on call, making up ten throughout the month

 

Is there a requirement that we don’t do  three consecutive on call sessions? Is there any limit to how many sessions of on call we may offer?

 

In the case of annual leave we may be expected to offer 10 nights on call even if we are on annul leave during the month. So for example I may be on annual leave for two weeks and then be expected to do 10 consecutive nights on call. This seems to be penalising us for taking annual leave.

 

Is there any regulation around on call that I should be aware of please? Also how do smaller chaplaincy teams offer on call?  I’d really appreciate some guidance around this. Has CHCC made any comments around the subject?
