Dear Hive Mind,

My colleague Dr Tegwen Roberts send this medal / prize query to me (with attached images) and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what it might be for, or had seen similar?

It was found in the collections of a person in the Northern Territory of Australia but links back to 1930s Elsecar, Barnsley, S. Yorkshire – a model industrial village linked to Wentworth Woodhouse / Earls Fitzwilliam.

We think it could have been a music prize. There were many community competitions with prizes handed out from the paternalistic Earls…but that is about it and the abbreviations are a mystery to me. A little more info below.

Any tips, info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated to pass on down under.

Any thoughts? Definitely looks like a music festival prize. Not sure what mid means though.

Best wishes

My maiden name is Karen Jessop and I was born in Bradford but moved to Australia when I was three years old.

We are sorting out my sister’s estate and came across a medal (photos attached).  I assume it is from my grandfather as neither of my parents were born by 1932.  My grandfather’s name was George Jessop (I think).

I was wondering if you have any background information about the medal and what it was for?  My father was a very good singer and maybe his father was as well.

Kind regards
