We will learn how to quickly read a paper and grasp its key findings, how to interpret and understand key data, how to appraise a paper’s methods and assess its usefulness and value. We will look at ‘internal validity’ - how close the research has got to the ‘truth’, and ‘external validity’ - can the research be usefully applied in our own work situation? Overall the course aims to help you become a better user of research. During the day we will look at a typical healthcare scenario where evidence could inform decision making, then appraise a paper - looking for key findings and assessing its suitability and applicability to the scenario. We will also look at numerous tools available to help with the appraisal process. *Who will benefit from the course?* Anyone who uses or would like to use research more in their work, or who would like to build quickly build confidence in reading and interpreting research, including: ● Academics & Researchers ● Health and social care clinicians/practitioners ● Post graduate students ● Health Librarians and Information Specialists *Early bird booking rates for this course will close on 17th July 2019.* *Standard booking will close on 3rd September 2019. * Link to further course information: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/scharr/shortcourseunit/criticallyappraiseresearch Advanced Simulation Methods 3 day course - Tuesday 1st - Thursday 3rd October 2019 *Overview:* Within healthcare decision making, cohort Markov models and decision trees are frequently used. However, in some situations these are not the most appropriate modelling methods. This course provides an in-depth review of individual-level simulationrationale, techniques and methodologies with a particular focus on discrete event simulation and its practical application to inform healthcare decision making. From the fundamentals of a basic model the course will progress to modelling complex systems, verification and interpreting output, as well as exploring alternative software options. This course aims to provide participants with the skills required to be able to undertake simulation projects to a professional level. It will be both theoretically-based and practically-based, with the use of the Simul8 software package. It will cover the use of discrete-eventsimulation to assess the impact of alternative options within a local system with resource constraints and the use of patient-level simulation for health economic modelling. This course is primarily for health economic modellers who want to broaden their skill base, as well as healthcare decision makers who would like to understand more about patient-level simulation and when it might be useful. *Early bird booking rates for this course will close 1st August 2019.* *Standard booking will close on 17th September 2019. * Link to further course information: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/scharr/shortcourseunit/advancedsimulationmethods *Link to our Online Store, where all of our ScHARR short course bookings are initially processed:* http://onlineshop.shef.ac.uk/conferences-events/faculty-of-medicine-dentistry-and-health/school-of-health-and-related-research-scharr *If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the ScHARR Short Course Unit via this email address.* -- *Mrs Karen Holden and Ms Emma Bennett* *Short Courses & Events Officers* *University of Sheffield* *ScHARR* Regent Court 30 Regent Street Sheffield S1 4DA Tel: 0114 222 2968 Fax: 0114 272 4095 http://www.shef.ac.uk/scharr/shortcourseunit You may leave the list at any time by sending the command SIGNOFF allstat to [log in to unmask], leaving the subject line blank.
