medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Correction to my last post - mea culpa! Mark does indeed say that Jesuis began to drive out those who bought and those who sold!

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and cultureDear Jim

Surely Reau is wrong in terms of the biblical text at least - we are told that Jesus overturned the tables of the moneychangers, but nowhere is there mention of expulsion from the Temple.
I think this is an example of Reau seeking a relationship based on no evidence whatever!

But of course, I am only a retired priest, so what do I know!

Best wishes

Gordon

Dear Gordon,

I no of no other examples of this iconographic peculiarity, but Louis Reau points out that the Expulsion from Eden was related exegetically to Expulsion of the Moneychangers from the Temple.  The structure at right might just as easily represent the Temple as a city.  Another iconographic peculiarity is that the narrative of the font seems to run from right to left.

A very interesting work!

Cheers,

Jim

Learned ones, do you know of any other examples of this and can you suggest the origin of this iconographical peculiarity?
