The Effective Learning Environments initiative of the OECD aims to improve how learning environments support the pedagogies, curriculum, assessment and organisational structures of education to fully develop students’ capacities for the 21st century. The World Institute of Psychology identifies multiple links between education environments and learning aptitude, mood and behavior while UNESCO believes that education is a human right for all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality of both delivery and setting.

This Florida State University conference strand and its publications are premised on the belief that education professionals need to collaborate more closely with the designers, architects and planners who create the classrooms, learning spaces and tools we use daily, whether they be in a school environment, a play setting or in the home.

On that basis it brings together academics from education, teaching and learning with colleagues from environmental psychology, architecture, interior, product and game design. Other conference starnds focus on health professionals working with spatial designers.
