Welcoming acts for hostile times: One-day workshop
30th April, Queen Mary University of London
In the context of increasingly hostile and unwelcoming migration and asylum regimes across European states and beyond, there have emerged a plethora of practices and spaces
that seek to offer an alternative narrative of sanctuary and hospitality towards asylum seekers and refugees. These spaces and practices exist across a range of scales including regions, cities, neighbourhoods, universities and homes. Whilst scholars have
increasingly called for more heed to be paid to these spaces and practices of welcome, and the complex and contradictory power relations that govern such sites, there is a surprising lack of empirical engagement with the experiences of such spaces
among those who are the potential ‘recipients’ and ‘providers’ of welcome.
Through a combination of keynote presentations, an interactive workshop (led by theatre maker Sue Mayo), and a long-table discussion, this one-day workshop invites participants to critically interrogate
spaces, practices and politics of welcome in a range of contexts.
