Hi Catherine,
I did my dissertation on laybrothers and laysisters (mostly Gilbertines, but also looking at several other orders, including the Cistercians, Fontevrauldians, Grandmontines and others), in which I looked at quite a few
revolts, conflicts, and reputations gained for good or ill by laybrothers and laysisters (the latter to a much smaller level due to lack of sources). Is there a particular area or time period you're interested in?
If you wish to contact me off list, I can send a reading list and a copy of my dissertation. For Cistercians, the standard reference is still Donnelly, the
Decline of the Medieval Cistercian Laybrotherhood but you'll also find quite a few references in the Cistercian Statuta Capitulorum and
Exordium Magnum Cisterciense, and much of Chtsoguns Waddell's works (especially his edited collections) will be useful.
Cheers,
Nick ([log in to unmask])

Is anyone familiar with primary or secondary sources that indicate any
tensions between lay brothers/sisters, on the one hand, and the choir
monks/nuns on the other?
