medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Known in early Christianity, eg. Protevangelium of James (late 2nd c., ch. 21),  no spring, but his blood turned into stone (allusion in Mt, 23, 35) and Jerome's commentary ad loc., PL 26:174a.
The whole issue is very complicated because of the many Zachariahs (eg. 2 Paralip 24, 20-21), see A. Berendts, Studien über Zacharias-Apokryphen und Zacharias-Legenden.  Leipzig, A. Deichert, 1895.

This sounds like

Zechariah ben Jehoiada.

He appears in both Jewish and Christian sources.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
Can anyone suggest sources of a story about one Zacharias (possibly, but not necessarily, the father of John the Baptist) who was stoned in Jerusalem, and a spring broke forth where his blood fell? I'm not sure how old it is, my reference is from a post-Reformation source, a poem about St. Veronica (in Icelandic) which makes use of a Life of Pilate, among other things. Zacharias is not, apparently, mentioned in the  Icelandic translation of the Gospel of Nicodemus, or any other related source we have been able to find.
Happy New Year to all,
Meg
