Gentle Introduction to Statistical Analysis for Evaluation

Location: Basement Lab, Humanities Bridgeford Street, University of Manchester
Start getting to know the value of statistical software for improving your evaluation practice. Too often, quantitative evaluations rely on overly simplistic analysis. This workshop is designed to open the door to using appropriate statistics
to analysis and report on your data. This workshop provides an initial introduction to key statistical principles and 'how to’ advice for starting to use statistical analysis software for evaluation for people with no or minimal training in statistics. In
this workshop, you will be encouraged to bring your own data and computer to practice for yourself with support from the expert speakers.
The workshop covers the following topics:
• Introduction to key principles of statistical analysis
• Examples of statistical analysis for evaluation projects
• Basic introduction to the statistics software package SPSS (commercial product offered by IBM) - and the free equivalent, PSPP
• How to use SPSS to analyse your evaluation data using descriptive statistics
Bring your own evaluation data to work with, or if you don’t have any available you will be provided with an example dataset.
Course Leader
The training will be led by Dr Eric Jensen, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick. Dr Jensen is a world-leading expert in evaluation of public engagement and informal learning impact and quality of experience. He
holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge (UK) and teaches social research methods at the University of Warwick.
Dr Jensen has extensive experience designing and conducting quantitative and mixed methods evaluations at institutions including the National Gallery, London Zoo, Natural History Museum and The University of Cambridge.
