"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY ISSUE 103 (WINTER 2018) -------------------------------------------------------------- Issue 103 (Winter 2018), consisting of 84 pages, was published in November 2018 and has been distributed to all paid subscribers and print-issue members in good standing of the Washington Map Society. Copies are available for purchase. FREDRIC SHAUGER examines many of Boazio’s maps. CRAIG CLINTON highlights the pictorial map art of Antoncich. DON McGUIRK describes early map depictions of the US flag. DENNIS REINHARTZ describes his discovery of an original copperplate of Herman Moll. ROD LYON relates that numerous previously unknown maps of Monaco are now being found in European institutions. BERT JOHNSON provides a preview of what is known thus far about the ICHC 2019 meeting in Amsterdam. BERT also summarizes activities at the ISHM meeting in Portland, Maine last summer. A relatively new journal is reviewed. BERT JOHNSON is Vice President of WMS. He has attended nine of the last ten ICHCs and is looking forward to Amsterdam. DAVID RODERICK LYON helped create and launch “The Map Collector” and wrote many articles for that popular magazine. A long-time former resident of Monaco, he is the author of “Monaco Autrefois: Old Printed Maps, Charts, and Plans of Monaco: 1640-1879.” DONALD McGUIRK has had a prolonged interest in early printed world maps. He has written many articles for numerous publications and is the creator of the e-cartobibliography “The Last Great Cartographic Myth: Mer de l’Ouest.” HAROLD MEINHEIT, Secretary of the Washington Map Society, is a former American diplomat who spent much of his career in Asia. ROBERT MORRIS is Cartographic Acquisitions Specialist, Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress. DENNIS REINHARTZ, an emeritus professor of history at The University of Texas at Arlington, is the author of “The Cartographer and the Literati – Herman Moll and His Intellectual Circle” and “The Art of the Map.” THOMAS SANDER is Editor of The Portolan. FREDRIC (FRED) SHAUGER’s unanticipated observation of Boazio’s work resulted in research which ultimately led to his article.
