TS4.3/GM4.7: Surface Processes, Tectonics and Continental Rifting: Examples from SE Asia and Worldwide
Continental breakup is a fundamental tectonic process that also has significant impacts on the geomorphology of the region affected. Rifting induces both subsidence and uplift and thus an erosional response that might be recorded both in the thermochronology
of the region surrounding the new basin as well as in the sedimentary fill. it has further been argued that focused erosion may induce flow in the ductile middle and lower crust that also affects patterns and rates of subsidence both during and after the
end of active extension. A particularly dramatic example is the South China Sea which is a wide continental rift and has the largest area of submerged continental crust in the world with thick sedimentary basins reflecting the erosional history of the surrounding
continents. Through IODP there has been concerted effort to define the timing of rifting and seafloor spreading. How has the lithosphere deformed and controlled the location and rate of opening and have surface processes affected this? This session encourages
contributions that explore connections between margin landscape developments and opening history in SE Asia, as well as other margins worldwide
