My clipboard and hammer used to have strips of reflective tape of the type used on lifeboats and life-jackets. That sticks VERY well and is good in day and night. My compass and hand lens go on string around my neck, which makes for a nice jangling noise when climbing over rocks.

I follow John in painting my garden tools bright colours. It saves them turning up in the compost heap three years later.

Hi Christie,

when I got fed up losing my compass because I was thinking too deep during mapping in the Alps, I put everything on a three feet cord and tied my field book, pencil, compass to my belt.

Now I am using an iPhone with Rick Allmendinger’s fantastic Stereonet app, which also offers easier ways to locate a phone if you lost it.

kind regards,

Janos

Hi Christie,

After I had to recruit half a dozen people to help track down a small beige pouch I had dropped containing my passport and loads of money (somewhere in the last mile or so, somewhere over this alluvial fan surface), all my gear is marked with fluorescent orange duct tape. The tape has stood up quite well over the years since, and I haven't lost anything else so far. Gaffer tape might also work well, though it's more likely to get dirty and lose brightness over time... fantastic for labeling samples though.

Best,

Taylor

Dear Christie,

I roughen up, with corundum paper, as large an area as possible of compass/clinometers, altimeters, phones, hand lenses, tablets, hammers, chisels, etc, then apply a bright yellow paint. I do the same with garden tools. I find yellow easier to spot than orange. Since I started doing this, many moons ago, I have lost nothing in the field, except my lunch!

All best wishes,
John Dewey

Hey everyone,
Happy New Year! I'm starting to think about field camp already and want to do something to our department Bruntons so they don't camouflage so effectively in the desert. We have a mixture of very old to very new Brunton compasses, both aluminum/enamel and composite. Has anyone tried bright orange paint, or reflector tape, or anything else? I don't want paint rubbing off on people or flaking off etc. Any tips / warnings much appreciated.

Cheers
Christie
