You use narrative in the sense I gave it in the bullet point list. Like I said, confusing. Narrative review in the sense of number 2 in my email was taken from the manual of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and from several SRs I have read over the years. One thing is certain: everyone agrees on meta-analysis (your 3, my 1) What about non-metas - do you have a word for them? I cannot find a paper at the moment but I am sure you have read some where the authors say something like “Result were heterogeneous so pooling was not undertaken. Here is what I think terms relating to research synthesis studies mean, based on how I have read them used. I welcome comments Systematic reviews (SR) = covers all reviews that use a systematic method* and includes 1, 2 and 3 1 Meta-analysis = SR which produces estimates of the size of the effect from the estimates in the all the studies i.e. pools effects. Sometimes called a quantitative review. 2 Narrative review = SR which does not pool results. Sometimes called a qualitative or non-quantitative review. 3 An SR using qualitative research methods of qualitative research studies. Problems with terminology • Some narrative reviews conduct forms of quantitative analysis e.g.plot number of studies with statistically significant/non-significant results versus study quality, so calling them non-quantitative is silly. • Qualitative SRs (2 above) are definitely not qualitative research. • To add to the confusion, I have seen the term “narrative” applied to traditional, non-systematic reviews. * = A review that searches for, appraises, and synthesises all relevant studies relating to a specific question. It uses explicit and rigorous methods to do so.
