I would argue its value lies in the social model and the expert guidance it gives to us; thus we need the quality of a post 16 report but done from an earlier age ?

Subject: Re: Policy change re acceptance of pre 16 SpLD reports

As a diagnostic assessor I can confirm that I see very few learners in HE with a formal diagnosis of dyslexia; even those with Statements (as was) or EHCPs don't always have a clear diagnosis, and certainly even fewer have reports which would meet current SASC guidance for the assessment of SpLDs.

I do think this raises the question of the purpose of a diagnostic report.  Is it purely to provide a label (medical model) or to provide an analysis of impact on the learner in their own educational environment (two feet in the social model)?  Surely the uni as well as the student would welcome the latter, especially as the move to higher education can appear a giant leap for many, with very different demands being made than those at school, college or sixth form.

Hello Rob,

Many pre-16 ‘diagnoses’ turn out to be the JCQ Form 8s so we don’t anticipate our policy changing.

We currently accept pre-16 diagnoses of SpLDs for the purposes of internal support, but these are not as commonly presented as the Form 8s, which we no longer accept as evidence of anything other than the need to refer for a full diagnostic assessment.

Kind regards,

Simon

Subject: Policy change re acceptance of pre 16 SpLD reports

Apologies for cross posting.

With the announcement that SFE will soon start to accept SpLD reports pre 16, have colleagues started to consider the implications for reasonable adjustments, particularly in relation to exams?

Are most institutions going to change their policies to follow suit and accept pre 16 reports as evidence for adjustments for a SpLD?

We are starting to consider these implications and wondered what others might do if they are presented with a dyslexia report written when the student was 7, with literacy and cognitive scores being unrelated to the possible abilities of the student as an adult learner.  We are wondering if we will need to start conducting some literacy tests to confirm certain exam adjustments, such as a scribe/reader, use of a computer etc.  Has anyone else started to think about these issues and if so do you have any good answers!!!

Also, are institutions going to change policy mid-way through an academic year?  Our understanding is that this change will be announced next month.  Is it equitable to say to a student in September you need a new report, but in March they don’t?

I am sure there are plenty of other hidden implications to this possible change. Would colleagues be willing to share their thoughts on this?

Regards,

Rob.
