The Philosophisch-historische Fakultät of the University of Bern invites applications for an

Associate Professorship in Sociolinguistic Methods and Analysis

in its Center for the Study of Language and Society

The appointment will take effect from 1 August 2019.

The Institute seeks a scholar who can work and train both quantitatively and qualitatively in the discipline, and impart the strengths of both to his/her students. In their own research, applicants need to work across a range of different empirical approaches and can teach courses which integrate method and hands-on practice as well as theory, including in real-world applications of sociolinguistics.

Relevant subdisciplines include, but should not be seen as limited to: forensic sociolinguistics, socio-pragmatics, ethnography, linguistic anthropology, interactional sociolinguistics, variationist sociolinguistics, perceptual sociolinguistics, linguistic landscapes, applied sociolinguistics, language policy, historical sociolinguistics, critical sociolinguistics, and cognitive sociolinguistics.

Candidates are required to have a habilitation-thesis or equivalent qualifications. They should be engaged in innovative sociolinguistic research and be prepared to cooperate with colleagues of other disciplines and departments. Their independent teaching duties involve 8 hours per week of classes in the relevant Master degree courses and the Doctoral Programme in Language and Society. Information sheet

Associate Professorship in Sociolinguistic Methods and Analysis in the Center for the Study of Language and Society of the Humanities Faculty of the University of Bern, Switzerland. The successful candidate, for administrative purposes, will be housed in the most relevant language and literature department of the Faculty (English, French, German, Italian, Slavic, Spanish) or the Department of Linguistics. The appointment will take effect from 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible at the beginning of a semester thereafter.

 

The Institute seeks a scholar who can work and train both quantitatively and qualitatively in the discipline, and impart the strengths of both to his/her students. In their own research, applicants need to work across a range of different empirical approaches and can teach courses which integrate method and hands-on practice as well as theory, including in real-world applications of sociolinguistics. Relevant subdisciplines include, but should not be seen as limited to: forensic sociolinguistics, socio-pragmatics, ethnography, linguistic anthropology, interactional sociolinguistics, variationist sociolinguistics, perceptual sociolinguistics, linguistic landscapes, applied sociolinguistics, language policy, historical sociolinguistics, critical sociolinguistics, and cognitive sociolinguistics. Candidates are required to have a habilitation-thesis or equivalent qualification – this would comprise, for example, a book or cluster of articles from a research project entirely distinct from a candidate’s PhD research. Candidates should be engaged in innovative sociolinguistic research and be prepared to cooperate with colleagues of other disciplines and departments in the Faculty. A semester of sabbatical leave is normally granted after every six years of service.

 

Teaching duties consist of 8 hours per week of classes in each of the two semesters in the relevant Master degree courses and the Doctoral Programme in Language and Society. At present, there is no undergraduate teaching in the CSLS, but this may change in the future. The successful candidate will be expected to be active in the administration of the CSLS, including taking on the role of Director, as well as in the Faculty as a whole. 

 

Attached to the position is a 50% postdoctoral assistantship. The assistant can be hired by the successful candidate, but must contribute towards teaching and administration in the CSLS as well as support the Associate Professor.

 

Associate Professors are paid on salary scale 27 of the Canton of Bern. Salaries on this scale range (in 2018) from CHF115,000 to CHF203,000 per annum depending on age and experience. Ausserordentliche Professur für Soziolinguistische Methoden und Analyse am Center for the Study of Language and Society der philosophisch-historischen Fakultät der Universität Bern, Schweiz. Die/der erfolgreiche Bewerber*in wird aus administrativen Gründen an einem der für sie/ihn relevanten Sprachinstitute der Fakultät (Anglistik, Französistik, Germanistik, Italianistik, Slavistik, Hispanistik) oder dem Institut für Linguistik angesiedelt werden. Die Berufung wird ab 1. August 2019 oder so bald wie möglich nach Beginn des Herbstsemesters 2019 aktiv.

 

Gesucht wird eine Persönlichkeit, die sowohl in quantitativer als auch qualitativer Forschung im Fachgebiet ausgewiesen ist und die die Stärken beider Richtungen ihren/seinen Studierenden vermitteln kann. Bewerber*innen sollten in ihrer Forschung verschiedene empirische Herangehensweisen aufnehmen und fähig sein, Kurse zu unterrichten, die Methoden, Praxis und Theorie wie auch konkrete Anwendungen der Soziolinguistik, umfassen. Mögliche Forschungsschwerpunkte können (aber müssen nicht nur) in der forensischen Soziolinguistik, Soziopragmatik, Ethnographie, linguistischen Anthropologie, Interaktions-Soziolinguistik, Variationslinguistik, Wahrnehmungs-Soziolinguistik, linguistic landscapes, angewandten Soziolinguistik, Sprachenpolitik, historischen Soziolinguistik, kritischen Soziolinguistik und der kognitiven Soziolinguistik liegen. Voraussetzung für die Bewerbung ist die Habilitation oder der Nachweis einer gleichwertigen wissenschaftlichen Qualifikation. Eine solche liegt dann vor, wenn die/der Bewerber*in eine Monographie oder eine gewisse Anzahl an Artikeln zu einem Forschungsprojekt, das sich gänzlich von der Forschung unterscheidet, die während des Doktorats verfolgt wurde, vorweisen kann. Erwartet werden innovative soziolinguistische Forschungsleistungen und die Bereitschaft, mit benachbarten Disziplinen und Instituten eng zusammenzuarbeiten. Ein Forschungssemester wird i. d. R. nach sechs Dienstjahren gewährt.

 

Der Lehrauftrag beinhaltet acht Wochenstunden pro Semester in den entsprechenden Masterstudiengängen und im Doktoratsprogramm Language and Society. Im Moment gibt es keinen Bachelorstudiengang am CSLS, dies wird sich aber u. U. in Zukunft ändern. Von der/dem erfolgreichen Bewerber*in wird erwartet, dass sie/er sich aktiv an der Administration des CSLS beteiligt und das Center als Direktor*in innerhalb der Fakultät repräsentiert.

 

Eine 50% Assistenz (Postdoktorand*innen-Stelle) ist an die Professur geknüpft. Die Assistenz wird durch die/den erfolgreiche/n Bewerber*in angestellt und ist verpflichtet, ihren Beitrag zum Lehrauftrag und zur Administration des CSLS einschliesslich der Unterstützung der ausserordentlichen Professur, zu leisten.

 

Ausserordentliche Professuren stehen auf Gehaltsstufe 27 des Kantons Bern. Die Löhne auf dieser Stufe bewegen sich (Stand 2018) zwischen CHF115’000 und CHF203’000 pro Jahr und hängen vom Alter und der Erfahrung der/des Entlöhnten ab.
