Hi Pat,

We have touched on this but actually have another initiative ongoing around IP and licencing.

https://datasetlicencing.wordpress.com/

One of the proposed actions is more discussion around legal ownership and issues around research data and research notebooks.

I will keep posting to this list if we do anything.

Regards

Valerie

Hi Val,

Many thanks for all this. Not sure if that came up in your discussion but we were just asked around copyright and IP around notebooks and I must admit that I haven't followed the lab notebook discussion as much as I probably should.
Apparently in the US, dated signatures in lab notebooks can be used to prove someone's right to file a patent. Does someone know what the European situation around that looks like? Would sharing a lab notebook in Europe mean that someone could just use what you shared and go off and patent that? I don't see licensing being noted in your documents, so any insights and pointers on this are welcome.

Many thanks,
Patricia

Hello Duareen,

Thank you for your reply.

There were about 50 attendees from a range of disciplines.  Mainly medical, life sciences, veterinary studies but also other disciplines including arts who gave us some very interesting views and ideas.

DOI's are used in various ways with various controls so it will be interesting to see how this requirement develops.

We are just at the early stages of our current foray into research notebook requirements so hopefully we will investigate the ideas suggested more thoroughly over coming months.

Interesting Valerie.
Would you please give us an idea of the number of people who attended and disciplines so we can put the results in perspective.

Also, I noticed a request for DOIs. We use LabArchives here at the Univ of Utah and as the administrator I turned off DOI use. This is because whenever I teach a workshop on data management/Labarchives I find no one in the room knows what they are. Since DOIs are a bit of technology plus standards, and LabArchives provides no information (and they do provide other means for sharing) I cannot see a reason for allowing the creation of meaningless persistant identifiers. Maybe in another 10 years.

Hello All,

Here is an informal note on our recent research notebooks workshops.  We hope to keep up the discussion and will use this list to reach out to you to share experiences.
