Funded graduate student positions available in West Virginia University Geography Program (2019-20)



The Geography Program at West Virginia University is currently recruiting M.A. and Ph.D. students for 2019-20 academic year, with competitive funding packages available through Research and Teaching Assistantships.  WVU Geography offers both Master's and Doctoral degrees and a rigorous certificate program in Geographic Information Science.  Our graduate program is composed of 19 core geography faculty with expertise in the interdisciplinary subfields of Human Geography, Environmental Geography and GIScience (http://www.geography.wvu.edu/people).  WVU Geography faculty are engaged in local, regional and global research focused on human-environment relations, climate change, political geography, spatial science, digital humanities, forest ecosystem modeling, cultural and political ecologies, conservation science, feminist geography, science and technology studies, humanitarianism, land change science, critical cartographies, food justice, and development geography.  Faculty are currently conducting research in South Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, East Asia and the United States, including Appalachia. Departmental Funding Packages

Funded Ph.D. students will be guaranteed 3 years of funding through RA or TA positions, contingent upon progress within the program and are eligible for continued funding in years 4 and 5, based upon performance. Funded M.A. students are guaranteed 1 year of funding through RA or TA positions contingent upon progress within the program and are eligible for continued funding in year 2, based upon performance. All funded positions include a stipend, a tuition waiver, and health insurance.



Teaching Assistantships

The Geography Program offers competitive graduate teaching assistantships to M.A. and Ph.D. students. TAs are employed to work in support of undergraduate courses across environmental geography, geographic information science, and human geography. Applicants who wish to be considered for a TA position should make that request known in their application.



Research Assistantships

The geography faculty are recruiting for Graduate positions on currently funded projects, with additional funded positions expected to be added for the 2019-2020 academic year.  Applicants interested in the Graduate Research Assistantship described below are strongly encouraged to contact the research faculty prior to applying. In addition to the specific qualifications for these positions, potential candidates must meet the admission standards and be fully accepted into the Geology & Geography Department at WVU.

Funded Projects

M.A. Position in Climate Change Education - how to incorporate social factors that shape personal beliefs and perceptions - in Appalachia
Masters student with research interests in climate change education and perceptions.  The graduate students will work on campus-based projects to better understand social factors that shape personal beliefs and perceptions of climate change among students. This grant-funded project is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between the Hydrofeminist Lab and the Mountain Hydrology Lab in the WVU School of Natural Resources.  As such, the student will be expected to communicate and collaborate across social and natural sciences.
Applicants must submit a CV and research statement addressing specific interests and qualifications for the potential research topics outlined below. Candidates with an undergraduate degree in geography, environmental science, anthropology, sociology, women and gender studies, natural resource management or related fields are strongly encouraged to apply.  A background in mixed and/or qualitative methods is preferable. Willingness to work in interdisciplinary research projects is required. Potential candidates should demonstrate an ability and willingness to collaboratively conduct tasks such as: literature reviews, research design, field-based data collection and analysis (e.g. surveys, focus groups, and participant observation), community-oriented science communication and writing high quality peer-reviewed manuscripts. Funding includes a stipend, tuition waiver, and health benefits. Funding for second year dependent on performance.
