Dear Colleagues,

I would be grateful if you could forward the details of two PhD positions at the University of Leeds to any potential candidates. The deadline for both application is on the 7th of January 2019.

  1. Protein/lipid interactions: Determinants of lipid interactions with membrane proteins investigated by machine learning, molecular simulations and mass spectrometry.
Despite fast-growing data that describe interactions of membrane proteins with lipid molecules, the molecular and chemical details of many such interactions remain elusive. For this project the student will use molecular dynamics simulations, machine learning and mass spectrometry to identify how different membrane proteins interact with specific lipids.

  1. A computational and mechanistic study of sodium-activated potassium channel function.
The sodium-activated potassium channel KNa1.1 (KCNT1, Slack, Slo2.2) is found in neurons and its function is to conduct ions across neuronal membranes. In this project, the student will use molecular dynamics simulations and lab-based methodologies to study the mechanistic details of this ion channel activation and deactivation.
