medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Let me piggy back onto Laura's query, what about educating boys? I was taught that a convent education could be provided to boys and girls, for a fee, but this was back in the day and I didn't think to ask for details. I would specifically like to know about practices at the convent at Hereford in Westphalia, if anyone knows anything about it. An Icelandic bishop was educated there sometime in the 11th century.

Can anyone direct me to a literature on teaching in medieval convents?  I'm particularly interested in a Benedictine convent which may have been charging fees for educating girls who did not necessarily enter a religious life on graduating. I may be misreading the situation as I have no context to compare it with.
