Hi Adam,

We don’t require library users to enter a PIN when they’re using our self-service machines (Bibliotheca smartserve 1000 kiosks).  We just ask them to hold up their card to the reader on the machine, put the items they want to borrow on to the shelf, and away they go.  It’s widely understood – and practised – by students that any university cards they find should be handed into the university, either to the library reception if they find it in the library or to another helpdesk if it’s elsewhere on campus.  There will be the inevitable isolated examples of misuse, but I wouldn’t say they are common enough to justify each student having to enter a PIN every time they borrow something.

Best wishes,

Tom

Subject: Self-service machines and PINs

Hi all,

We are reviewing the processes used on the self-service machines in our libraries. We currently expect users to scan their ID card, and then enter a PIN number before issuing a book. This security feature was put in place (some time ago) so that, for instance, a found card could not be used by a 3rd party.

In this era of contactless tap-on payments do we still need users to enter a PIN number as well as swiping their ID cards before issuing?

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has recently tightened their self-service security, or libraries who feel no need for an additional step in proving ID.

Thanks J
