Dear Joy

I would also consider:

1. Rights management (including copyright and data protection issues associated with your content. Even old stuff can still have issues). You will need a process to both identify any rights issues, and then further processes to try and trace rights holders, clear rights and/or risk manage.

2. Decent collections management software to manage rights and permissions, as well as attempts you will need to make to trace the rights holders.

3. A sensible approach to risk (and decent risk mitigation processes), in order to free up stuff in copyright where you can’t trace the rights holders (orphan works), whilst still balancing this against legal/ethical commitments

I hope that helps

My best wishes

Subject: [MCG] Advice on scanning rare materials

Dear All,
We are considering scanning some of our special collections, (rare pamphlets and books), and were wondering if anyone with experience of a similar project could comment/advise on the following:
i.	What devices would you recommend for scanning?
ii.	What related materials (e.g. book cradles) did you use to avoid damaging the books and materials?
iii.	Can you name any recognized best practice standards for scanning rare materials which would be a helpful guide?
iv.	Can you name the software which you use to view the scanned materials?
v.	What beneficial features does this software have and would you recommend it?
vi.	Is there anything else we should take into account when considering a digitization project?
Any advice and guidance would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Joy
