Dear Colleagues,

The London hearings of the Carbon Majors are underway at the London School of Economics. The hearings are live streamed here <https://www.youtube.com/user/GranthamResearch

Joana Setzer and I have written a blog post on the hearings and what to expect: <http://www.lse.ac.uk/GranthamInstitute/news/the-carbon-majors-inquiry-comes-to-london/

The hearings will conclude with a public debate on Thursday 8th November at 6:30 in the Hong Kong Theatre, Clement's House, London School of Economics, featuring Commissioner Cadiz, Luke Harrington, Kristin Casper, Stephen Humphreys, Joana Setzer and myself. You can find out the details on how to attend here: <http://www.lse.ac.uk/GranthamInstitute/event/human-rights-and-climate-change/

A recording of the event will be available here: <http://www.lse.ac.uk/lse-player?category=public+lectures+and+events

At the event, a student competition to support the drafting of the Philippines Human Rights Commission’s recommendations will be launched. The competition is supported by the Institute of Environmental Science for Social Change in the Philippines, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Stirling.

University undergraduate and graduate students from around the world can take part in the competition, individually or in group, by submitting proposals on the content of the Commission’s recommendations. We are looking for entries of up to 1,000 words in answer to the following question:

What recommendations should the Philippines Human Rights Commission give as a result of the Carbon Majors inquiry?

Shortlisted entries will be judged by a group of academic experts. The best submission will feature in Ratio, LSE’s law magazine <http://www.lse.ac.uk/law/news/2018/ratio2018>. The winner will also receive a certificate issued by the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines and a £250 prize.

Entries should be in English and consist of a PDF document, clearly indicating the name of the competitors, their university affiliation and university email address.

Entries should be emailed to <[log in to unmask]> by Friday 1 March 2019.

Further details on the competition may be accessed here: <http://essc.org.ph/content/student-competition

We hope you will share this information with students, and prompt them to engage in this important and topical debate.

All best wishes,

Annalisa
