THEMES:
Research in the field of media innovations focus on understanding change as it relates to new players in the media landscape, new roles of media users, new business models and new media formats (cf. Storsul and Krumsvik, 2013). To date, studies of media innovations have primarily explored media innovations that occur within established media organizations and institutions, but not significantly explored the perspective of societal change. However, media innovations do have consequences for social processes, with particular regard to participation, empowerment and democracy. To date, the social implications of media innovations remain significantly under-researched. This Special Issue aims to address this research gap. We invite a range of theoretical and empirical research.

Published research articles will explore the relationship between media innovation and social change by focussing on topics such as: Media innovation and activism; Minority, marginalized or disadvantaged communities; User empowerment and user participation in Media Innovation; Media innovation and ethical dilemmas (including business ethical dilemmas); Media innovation and social movements; Media innovations that are initiated either wholly or partly outside of traditional media organizations; Media innovations and technological infrastructure for social change; and, governance and policy issues.

Keynote speaker:
The workshop will include a keynote lecture from Professor Christopher Csíkszentmihályi - ERA CHAIR, Scientific Director, and Member of Faculty at Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute. Christopher works with Civic Media, Sociotechnical Systems, Robotics and Media Activism.

Editors:
Stefania Milan, Associate Professor of New Media and Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and Associate Professor (II) of Media Innovation at the University of Oslo and Niamh Ni Bhroin; Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo.
