Dear colleagues,

The RCS is seeking to appoint its next Director of Library and Archives to succeed the current post-holder, Thalia Knight, who will retire early next year. Please pass on this information to colleagues who may be interested. Further information is on the RCS website, lisjobnet and jobs.ac.uk as well as LinkedIn.

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is the professional body for surgery. Our mission is to build the future of the surgical profession and improve the delivery of surgical care. We do this through education, training, examination, supporting surgical research and audit/evaluation.

About the role

The RCS is seeking to appoint its next Director of Library and Archives to succeed the current post-holder who will retire early next year. The College Library was founded in 1807 and all the library and archives collections were Designated in 2013 in recognition of their national and international significance. The library delivers innovative, highly regarded services to around 25,000 members based in the UK and internationally. The rare books collection and archives are well used by researchers from a wide range of disciplines from all over the world.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and collaborative individual with excellent communication skills to provide strategic and operational leadership within an institution undergoing major change as part of its Project Transform Programme (https://www.rcseng.ac.uk/about-the-rcs/transforming-surgery-for-tomorrow/building-on-our-heritage/). This includes the restoration and refurbishment of the grade II* listed library and the redevelopment of the world famous Hunterian Museum, due to re-open in 2021. Following a restructuring programme, the library and archives department is based within the Learning and Quality Directorate.
