Dear Clare, The compiled MEX files distributed with PALM are indeed a bit old and not compatible with recent versions of MATLAB on macOS. The simplest solution would be to copy the new versions from SPM12: https://github.com/spm/spm12 i.e. replace the directories @file_array, @gifti, @nifti, @xmltree from PALM/fileio with the ones from SPM12. As for spm_existfile (in PALM/fileio/extras), replace it with this one: https://github.com/spm/spm12/raw/master/spm_existfile.mexmaci64 or just remove all of the spm_existfile.mex*: MATLAB will instead use the simpler implementation from spm_existfile.m.
