The Past, Present and Future of Charity Archives

Meg Venter (Sector Development Manager: North West & Charities at The National Archives, UK)

It has long been noted that the records of charities and voluntary sector organisations are vulnerable to dispersal and disposal, and within this context, the Campaign for Voluntary Sector Archives (founded in 2012) and the British Academy funded project ‘Digitising the Mixed Economy of Welfare’ have taken steps to address these issues through targeted advocacy and information about how voluntary organisations can safeguard their records. In this context, The National Archives has taken steps to develop specific advice and guidance for charity archive services and those charities looking to develop and safeguard their records into the future. In this seminar, I will give an overview of these efforts to date and our plans for the future, building upon the themes expressed in the strategic vision for the archives sector, Archives Unlocked.
