This year the Internet Archive (archive.org and openlibrary.org) would like to celebrate World Digital Preservation Day (Thursday, November 29th) by hosting a tour of our digitisation centre inside the Wellcome Collection, London, UK.
Since 1996, Internet Archive's mission has been to preserve the knowledge of the world by offering free long term online access to historians, scholars, researchers, and the general public.
As part of this mission, we’ve been digitising books all around the world. At our London scan centre alone we’ve digitised more than 177,000 books in the last four years for our partners. That means we’ve scanned nearly 28,000,000 images, all of which are available freely online.
If you’re interested in knowing more about how the Internet Archive digitises, if you or your organisation were thinking about starting a digitisation project, or if you’re just plain curious, please come on our tour where we can show you how a book gets digitizes from beginning to end.
Please see our Eventbrite for all of the details and to register for a free ticket--I’m afraid that the tour must be limited to 20 people due to space constraints. However, if space fills up quickly, I’d be happy to do another tour in the afternoon or to schedule an individual that suit your schedule.
Please contact me with any questions and I hope to see some of you there!
(P.S. Please check out our Instagram, where we post some of the beautiful, strange, and unusual things we find while digitizing...!)
