Colleagues,

For info:

A petition has been launched to make "Essay mills" illegal. This comes following decisions in Ireland and New Zealand to ban them.  The text of the petition is below:

 https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/227277

Please consider signing the petition and passing it on to friends and colleagues in NTU and other universities. I know from talking to colleagues across this University and others that contract cheating and our apparent inability to deal with it is a concern for many.

I get particularly worked up about this because I have to drive past one of these establishments every day on my way to and from work and the local ASDA. It is called UK Essays (along with various other names) and is based in a nondescript office building opposite (somewhat ironically) Arnold library. It can be found online at https://www.ukessays.com/ (but not from NTU since someone has wisely had it blocked). I am reliably informed that they have in the past employed our graduates and that they send emails to our students advertising their 'products'. Of course this company is not to be confused with https://ukessay.com/ which hasn't yet been blocked (so check it out - and note the poor English). There are (depressingly) many more such websites and companies.

Like you, my colleagues and I in the NLC spend a good deal of our time encouraging students to engage with their academic study and to have the confidence to express their ideas in their own words. These essay mills completely undermine our work, devalue our awards and prey on vulnerable students.

The petition needs 10,00 signatures by the end of February to get a response from government and 100,000 to get a debate in parliament. It's someway short at the moment so please add your name if you can.

Cheers

Martin
