There has been a lot of interest lately in narrative writing in medicine.
Two books came out earlier this year that may be relevant - not academic books but written by a nurse and a doctor respectively.
Christy Watson is a former nurse and now Creative Writing lecturer here at St Mary's University.
Kathryn Mannix writes eloquently on her experiences of terminally ill patients during her time as a doctor.

I think there may be potential for using both these texts in teaching.

The choice of resources would depend on the instructor's goal for the assignment.

  *   Is the purpose to build empathy and awareness of nursing issues by reflecting on and telling a story that reveals an aspect of the patient's lived experience (perhaps in relation to health or healthcare, or that shows the patient as 'more than' a patient)? If so, a resource that focuses on narrative essays that use story to make a point is at https://writingcommons.org/employing-narrative-in-an-essay).
  *   If the goal is for students to write a (more typical) reflective essay about the incident or situation they chose to tell the story about? Dear All,
Does anyone have experience or resources used to support students with an assignment to write an academic narrative essay that they would be willing to share?

Our L4 nursing students have been set an assignment to write an academic narrative essay about a patient. I am currently working with the academic delivering the unit (alas she was not the one who designed the assessment merely inherited it) to come up with a guide on how to write an academic narrative essay.

One of the challenges we are having is in supporting students to be able to be sufficiently but not overly descriptive whilst being analytical and evidence based. Hence, avoiding the pull of being purely descriptive as a narrative would normally be.
