There has been a lot of interest lately in narrative writing in medicine. Two books came out earlier this year that may be relevant - not academic books but written by a nurse and a doctor respectively. Christy Watson is a former nurse and now Creative Writing lecturer here at St Mary's University. Kathryn Mannix writes eloquently on her experiences of terminally ill patients during her time as a doctor. I think there may be potential for using both these texts in teaching. Our L4 nursing students have been set an assignment to write an academic narrative essay about a patient. I am currently working with the academic delivering the unit (alas she was not the one who designed the assessment merely inherited it) to come up with a guide on how to write an academic narrative essay. One of the challenges we are having is in supporting students to be able to be sufficiently but not overly descriptive whilst being analytical and evidence based. Hence, avoiding the pull of being purely descriptive as a narrative would normally be.
