Advisor, Social Determinants of Health

The Department of Family, Health Promotion and Life Course (FPL) of the Pan American Health Organization promotes, coordinates and implements technical cooperation at the regional, sub regional and country levels, emphasizing the central role of the family and community to foster a culture of health promotion and protection in which health is a social value and a human right. FPL focuses on the development and implementation of programs for women and men’s health; sexual and reproductive health; maternal and neonatal health; the integrated health and development of children and adolescents; the health of aging populations; food and nutrition; comprehensive family immunization and leads innovative, inter-sectoral and strategic efforts to address the social determinants of health.

The incumbent will be responsible for technical cooperation in social, political, economic and commercial determinants of health in the Region, including multi-sectoral policy approaches, extendable to other regions as part of PAHO/WHO strategies.  The incumbent will also be responsible for programmatic functions and strategic and work plans under themes related to the Determinants of Health, within the Department of Family, Health Promotion, and Life Course, in close collaboration with other PAHO/WHO Entities and PAHO/WHO Representatives (PWRs), as well as with regional and international agencies.

The successful candidate will have:

::A university degree in health or social science and a master’s degree in public health or a related field from a recognized institution.

:: Nine years or more of combined national and international experience in technical cooperation programs and projects that address the determinants of health, community-based solutions, and policies in local and national social development programs, as well as equity.

:: Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language.  Knowledge of Portuguese and/or French would be an asset.
