medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Right. There are some data on the archdeanery of Norwich, which show that, of 358 parish churches, only 6 possessed complete bibles, and some 12 a glossed partial bible. But almost all possessed lectionaries. (See my Introduction to the medieval bible, CUP 2014, 45.)

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Robert,

English parishes would not necessarily have had a complete Bible until mandated in the 1540s as part of the Reformation. Parishes would have had a variety of liturgical books, which would have included some bits of the Bible, a collection of saints lives, and maybe a sermon collection. For more info you might check my <I> People of the Parish<I>

Best,

Is there any way of knowing if the whole Bible (vulgate or others) was adequately available in Medieval England? Did each church or parish have at least one? What was the role of partial texts: NT, OT, Psalms, one book, one extra-canonical book?

Is there any story, poem, etc. in medieval English literature that portrays someone other than a priest, a monk, a nun reading a Bible?

Thank you for your attention.
