medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I would disagree about seeing two magpies.  I was brought up on

‘One for sorrow

Two for joy

Three for a girl

Four for a boy

Five for silver

Six for gold seven for a secret that’s never been told.’

We have a magpie family nearby and can see up to five at a time

Hi Stephen, all.

Roud, Steve (2003). The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland. London: Penguin Books ad vocem.

…..

We are also advised to protect ourselves from harm when we have walked under a LADDER, seen two MAGPIES, or otherwise tempted fate. ….

Best,

Roberto
