I was thinking more of the Fifth Column for the enemy within
and Vaterlandslose Gesellen by Adam Scharrer, novel, 1930, was simply
an anti-war novel, I am sure he didn´t use the expression that way.

Especially considering Francis Beckett’s use of Enemy Within as title of his book on British Communists, (and R. Davenport-Hines’ “enemies within” for spies) an equivalent might be the German 19th/20th century “vaterlandslose Gesellen”.

A good translation might be “der innere Feind” or “der Feind im Innern”. Depending on the historical context, “Reichsfeinde” (used during the Empire for socialists and Catholics) or “Volksfeinde” (during the Nazi regime) were used, too. I think it really depends on the context, which translation fits best.

Dear List,

I'm looking for a decent translation of 'the enemy within' in German. My online research hasn't led me terribly far...

Many thanks in advance,

David
