Dear all,

the BGA is keen that more BGA-type geophysicists are
nominated for RAS medals.  In particular we want to
see early-career geophysicists nominated for the Fowler
and Winton Capital awards.

This year the RAS is inaugurating an online application system.
I have just worked my way through it to nominate someone,
and on the way I wrote some instructions, which I have added
at the end of this email.

Please do give it a try!  And if my instructions don't work,
email me (not the list) and I will correct them and/or take
it up with the RAS.

We look forward to lots of worthy geophysicists being nominated.

Sheila Peacock,
British Geophysical Association awards officer.

Dear Colleague,

Nominations are invited for RAS Medals and Prizes to be awarded in January 2019. The deadline for nominations this year is 20 August 2018, with the exception of the Patrick Moore Medal and the Annie Maunder Medal for Outreach which have a deadline of 28 September 2018.

A list of the awards available this year is provided below. Some awards are made in two subject areas:

  • A - astronomy and astrophysics, broadly defined, including cosmology, astroparticle physics, astrobiology and astrochemistry
  • G - geophysics, solar physics, solar-terrestrial physics, planetary science, and meteoritics

Anyone may submit a nomination for an award, it is not necessary to be a Fellow of the RAS. All nominations are made in strict confidence; nominees should not be informed of submissions in order to avoid unnecessary disappointment. Unsuccessful nominations from the last two awards cycles are in some cases reconsidered. Repeat or duplicate submissions carry equal weight. Special conditions apply for nominations of current members of the RAS Council(contact [log in to unmask]uk for details).

Full details on how to nominate are available, or follow the links below:

  • Medals and prizes:
    • Gold Medal (A) and Gold Medal (G), the Society's highest honours for sustained contribution and success in the field of Astronomy or Geophysics respectively.
    • Chapman Medal (G) for investigations of outstanding merit in the science of the Sun, space and planetary environments or solar-terrestrial physics
    • Eddington Medal (A) for investigations of outstanding merit in theoretical astrophysics
    • Herschel Medal (A) for investigations of outstanding merit in observational astrophysics
    • Jackson-Gwilt Medal (A) for outstanding invention, improvement, or development of astronomical instrumentation or techniques
    • Patrick Moore Medal for outstanding contribution to teaching astronomy or geophysics
    • Annie Maunder Medal for outstanding contribution to outreach and public engagement for astronomy or geophysics
    • Price Medal (G) for investigations of outstanding merit into formation and composition of the Earth and/or planets (e.g. seismology, tectonics, geodesy, geomagnetism, solar system dynamics, meteoritics)
    • Fowler Award (A) and Fowler Award (G) for individuals who have made a particularly noteworthy contribution to these sciences at an early stage of their research career
    • Winton Award (A) and Winton Award (G) for the astronomy or geophysics postdoctoral research fellow in a UK institution whose career has shown the most promising development
    • Group Award (A) and Group Award (G) for outstanding achievement by large consortia
    • Service Award (A) and Service Award (G) for individuals who, through outstanding or exceptional work, has promoted, facilitated or encouraged the sciences of astronomy or geophysics and developed their role nationally or internationally
  • Named lectures:
    • George Darwin Lecture (A), given annually by a distinguished speaker on a suitable topic in astronomy (including astrochemistry, astrobiology, astroparticle physics, etc)
    • Harold Jeffreys Lecture (G), given annually by a distinguished speaker on a suitable topic in geophysics, and is generally reserved for topics concerning the interior structure, formation and composition of the Earth and/or planets (e.g. seismology, tectonics, geodesy, geomagnetism, solar system dynamics, meteoritics).
    • James Dungey Lecture (G), given annually by a distinguished speaker on a suitable topic in geophysics, including solar physics, solar-terrestrial physics or planetary sciences (the lecture normally covers topics concerning the science of the Sun, solar environment, planetary environments or solar- terrestrial science)
  • Honours:
With best regards,

How to nominate someone through the new RAS system
for a RAS award.   (Sheila Peacock, July 2018)

1. Go to the (new website) page for the award you want: these
are accessible from the tab "Awards & Grants" in the top
menu bar of the homepage https://ras.ac.uk  Select
"Geophysics Awards" from the "Award Category" dropdown menu,
then scroll down to the award for which you want to make a
nomination and click on the title of the award.  e.g. for Fowler award it is:

https://ras.ac.uk/awards-and-grants/awards/2266-fowler-award-g

2. Read the instructions for nominating, then prepare the nomination
document according to the instructions for that particular award.
Allowable formats include Microsoft Word doc and docx, and pdf
(this is not the full list).

3. Then click on "Fill out the form here".

3. You will reach a login page.  PLEASE NOTE - even if you have
set up a login ID on the RAS website to pay your annual subscription
or cast votes for Council, you need to set up a new one here (!).
Fill in the form with your name, email address and your chosen
user ID, then submit, wait for confirmatory email, click on link
in email, and set your password.

4. Log in with new ID.  Unfortunately the homepage for your
account, to which you will be taken, has no links
to a NEW nomination form, only to part-completed ones.

5. Go BACK to the awards-and-grants page for the award for which
you want to nominate and click AGAIN on "Fill out the form here".
This time it should open the nomination form (unless you have
disabled cookies).  Check that the name of the right award is
at the top of the form-filling page - the form is customised
for each award.

6. Fill in the contact details for yourself and the nominee.

7. Upload the required document (nomination statement - read
the instructions!).

8. If you have to leave it in the middle, click on "save draft".
Your homepage will list "Your saved form drafts": do not be
put off by the phrase "Submitted on XXX date" - it means "Saved".
You can then log out (button is in middle of your homepage).
When you return to it, click on the medal name of your saved
draft, not the "view" button, then on the big green bar at the top,
which should say "you have a pending draft for this webform.
Load your pending draft", to get back to an editable version.

9. Press "Submit" when complete (green button).  It should now
appear under "Your previous form submissions".   The green bar
should say "You have already submitted this webform.  View your
previous submission".  Clicking on it allows you to view, not edit,
your submitted form.
