Location:

Salary:

Hours:

Full Time

Contract Type:

Fixed-Term/Contract

Closes:

25th July 2018

‘Knowing the secret police: secrecy and knowledge in East German society’ is a three year research project funded by the AHRC. It overturns the approach of existing research to ask not what the ‘all-powerful’ Stasi knew about society, but what and how East Germans knew about the ‘secret police’. It seeks to have impact on dominant narratives on the GDR past in Germany today.

As lead research associate you will support project administration and overarching project work, as well as contribute to the ‘Networks’ strand which explores how knowledge about the Stasi may have been shared within particular groups of people, including the German Lutheran Church, in the workplace, and in wider social networks. You will support the PI in constructing a historical ethnography of the German Lutheran Church in one region and take sole responsibility for the social networks study. You will collect data, support analysis, write up and present findings for academic and lay audiences, organise project events, and liaise with the project team and advisory committee.

With a PhD in history/anthropology/sociology/German Studies or a related discipline, you will be an experienced researcher with demonstrable organisational/administrative experience and the potential to write and publish excellent research for diverse audiences. You will be fluent in German and English, have experience in historical approaches and interviewing techniques and an interest in questions of memory, history-writing and the GDR.

This post is fixed term for 36 months starting 1st October 2018. Interviews will take place in mid August.

Please be advised that due to a new minimum salary threshold of £30,000 per annum imposed by the UKVI, this post may not qualify for University sponsorship under Tier 2 of the points based system.
