Dear Adam,

Thanks for your email. I understand that in an ideal world it would be preferable to have a source of long term funding but I am afraid that this isn’t possible with the current public engagement grants that The Society offers.

My personal opinion with this question is that it would make your application stronger if you were to say that the Society would own the rights to this character if they were to fund it, however, I of course don’t make any decisions on who should and shouldn’t be funded. I am sorry I can’t be of more help but do let me know if you have any more questions about this and I will do my best to answer them.

Good luck with your application.

Best wishes,

Anna

Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Up to £5000 available for public engagement about physiology

Dear Ms Lakey,

I have been working on the proposal to deliver an animated science character that introduces papers from your publications, the idea being that each video is selected to have a specific target audience, i.e., tinnitus or dementia for example. Relevant charities for each launch be asked to promote the video and the author expected to respond to questions in the youTube comments for the couple of weeks after the launch. Initially my offer would be to create the channel and provide 3-4 videos. However the logical thing to then do is to continue with the format on the channel to build audience and generate legacy and get ever more hits as watchers of one video on the channel watch more. That of course requires money and further investment, in my dreams of course the Society would be so in love with the outcomes that they would find that funding. However realism creeps in. Another way to do that would be to offer to continue the channel with funding from other societies looking to promote their publications, for example I am currently creating a set of sex education videos for the Society for Endocrinology. This of course means that the Society would lose control of the channel and character I create as an outcome of the grant in return for seeing a more viable legacy and long term outcome. Which way do you recommend I jump? A) Do I offer a bespoke channel? B) Do I offer to start a generic channel? C) Do I offer to start a channel that gives the society the option to decide if they retain through further investment or release it back to me to try and further promote through separate funding at the end of the grant?

Kind regards and thank you for any advice given,

Adam McNamara
