Hi,

I have just rang AQA again and they have asked me to put it in writing as no one is available to give guidance from the access team.

The email address is [log in to unmask]

Please can you all email in and they seem to think it is only this centre that has queried it?

By the way the guidance given by AQA – spent 60 minutes on section A and 45 minutes on B they have confirmed is only advice they would expect the student to manage their time- does that help?

Kind regards

Jen

Hi Peter

No, that would equate to 75% extra time.  They should only get 25% on the Writing and 50% on the Reading.

To make it even more confusing, could this be considered where a student has 25% Extra Time (for whatever arrangement/s), Reader and Scribe, treating the paper as a whole:

·         25% Extra Time for 105 minutes is 26 minutes; 50% Extra Time for 105 minutes is 53 minutes, making a total of 1hr 19 minutes extra, so could possible finish at 12:04

Or am I completely barking?

Hi,

Very confused too and I just had the exact same conversation with a colleague.  AQA have advised us to apply 25% or 50% to the paper as a whole and the student is responsible for using the time as they like across the whole paper, but I know AQA told Jen to divide the time between Section A and Section B!  So if the boards don’t know then I’m not sure how we’re supposed to know….orange book is no help either.  We’re going with giving the time for the paper as a whole and the student uses that time as they wish.

Confused, tired and in need of gin…!

Many Thanks

Rachel

Hi

I for one find the timings confusing as well.  Although awarding bodies recommend that a candidate should spend approximately 60 of the total 105 mins on the Reading section and 45 on the Writing section, surely it’s the responsibility of the candidate to allocate the time as they seem fit?

I agree that a student with 25% Extra time is allocated an extra 26 minutes.  However, I’m not sure about the 50% allocation of an extra 13 minutes.  If you go by the 60 minutes for the Reading section timing, then should it not be an extra 30 minutes?

Can anyone with vast experience and a bigger brain than mine, please provide a definitive answer – please?

Hi Rachel

I worked out that students with 25% get an extra 26 mins giving 131 mins total.  Those who have the 50% for the Reading section get an extra 13 mins on top giving them 144 mins total.

Hi All,

We’re getting ourselves in a pickle with the timings for the GCSE English, 1 hour 45 min exam, and the scenarios below, mainly as the students will also get extra time for not having a reader in the reading section, so please can you help?!  We thought we had it sorted but we’re now not confident.  We’ve rang the exam board, AQA, and they weren’t very helpful.  Scenarios….

25% extra and a reader – how much extra time have you allowed

50% extra and a reader – how much extra time have you allowed

Many Thanks

Rachel
