Dear colleagues,

We are very pleased to announce that the University of Calgary is hosting
the 13th Annual Critical Geographies Mini-Conference (formerly known as the
Cascadia Critical Geographies Mini-Conference) with the support of the
Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, the interdisciplinary research
network UC Cities, and graduate student organizations.

The conference will be held on traditional territories of the people of the
Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot
Confederacy. The city of Calgary is also the home to Métis Nation of
Alberta, Region III and will work towards inclusion of non-academic
knowledges. We hope the unique geographies of Southern Alberta will provide
potential topics for scholarly work and excellent opportunities for diverse
knowledges and the arts to be engaged.

This year, the conference will be organized around the idea of “crisis”:
ecological crisis, political crisis, urban crisis, humanitarian crisis, and
socio-technical crisis are among the many specific topics that may be
covered. Tiffany Muller-Myrdhal, Senior Lecturer of Gender, Sexuality, and
Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University, has agreed to be our keynote
speaker.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018, with an evening
of pre-events on September 28nd. Please mark your calendars now and start
encouraging your grad students to attend. For geographers who have not
ventured to Calgary, this is your chance! Please note that travel within
Canada can be costly– early planning is encouraged. Travel to Calgary from
Vancouver, for example, is approximately 10.5 hours by car and 1.5 hours
via flights offered by both WestJet and Air Canada. Roundtrip tickets from
Vancouver are often about $350 CDN though seat sales regularly bring the
prices down.

Consistent with the long-standing goals of this conference, the emphasis is
on creating a fun, engaging, and friendly atmosphere that embraces an
unsettling of the “traditional” conference structure. We look forward to a
wide range of spatially-oriented critical scholarship and encourage
creative work on various themes from geography and other disciplines. There
is no fee to attend the conference and graduate students are particularly
encouraged to attend. We are currently exploring the possibility of
providing a select number of (partial) scholarships to cover specific
expenses related to the trip.

The conference website (including registration, abstract submission page,
directions, and accommodation information) will be “live” in July.

This year's conference will be a recognized GREEN EVENT! Look for compost
and recycling bins during the coffee breaks and lunch. No plastic bottles
will be provided, and all sandwiches will be vegetarian to reduce our
carbon footprint (we encourage you to bring your own mug and reusable
bottles).

Finally, please circulate this call to interested colleagues, students, and
other 'critters'. Feel free to contact Dr. Ryan Burns (
[log in to unmask]) directly if you have any specific questions.

Many thanks,
