The term is used a handful of times in the Chantry Certificates for Oxfordshire 1547. https://archive.org/stream/thechantrycertif00brituoft#page/n173/mode/2up/sea rch/free It doesn't seem to mean royal chapels or chapels of ease but just chantry chapels although it is not used for all of them. I understood a 'free' chapel was one outside episcopal jurisdiction but chantry foundations in a parish church must have been subject to the bishop, mustn't they? Does it simply mean that they were funded separately and were not the responsibility of the parish?
