Having recently joined the National Museums Scotland and encountered this, I think the term ‘digital labels’ is internal museum language. It probably comes from originally having regular (analogue) labels providing info on objects which were limited in scope, then digital screens came along and opened up lots more flexibility and opportunity to offer more dynamic content.

Thanks Ben and Te Papa for the blog post, very interesting, particularly that 2 minute stat! We recently completed some similar research into label interaction here at National Museum of Scotland, so I’ll share the findings in a blog post soon.

I’m in danger of looking stupid [nothing new there] - but I see these and think “screens on gallery” and not “digital labels”. Can someone help clarify the difference? Cos, surely, that’d also help with Danny’s point - a “label” is surely “a rapidly read bit of high level info” vs screen which is “much more in depth bit of information”..

Why so much content, and why the desire to game visitors into spending longer engaging with it?

I might just be a grumpy old man*, but spending 20 minutes reading a digital label in a room full of lovely physical things seems just a tiny bit excessive.

Or is delight a thing you can’t measure with KPIs?
