Dear colleagues,

Please find attached an industry supported PhD project at James Cook University. Can you please distribute this ad to any potential students you may have.

The project advertised is essentially a engineering geology/structural geology project in a large new underground Zinc mine in the Mt Isa District. The hanging wall to the ore zone is a strongly sheared graphitic shale unit truncated by fractures and faults. During stopping the mine experiences dilution of the ore due to unintended collapse of sections of the hanging wall. Through a careful study of the fracture patterns in the hanging wall the mine wants to be able to better predict the degree of dilution as stopping progresses. The work will involve close cooperation with the geology and geotechnical people at the mine and will involve a lot of digital modelling and probably a fair bit of statistical work (to be done in associated with the mine geo’s).

Cheers,
Ioan
