We have had scribes in Further Maths. We always tend to ask someone to scribe (obviously not anyone directly involved with the teaching of the student) who understands the subject so when the student dictates the name of the symbol they know what to put.

The student would be permitted to point to symbols on the actual exam paper, but not a crib sheet.

They could try drawing the symbol themselves or could explain exactly how to draw it (a little bit of extra time should be allow if this is the case).

Hope this helps.

We've only had scribes for GCSE Maths so far, so haven't really had the symbol issue. Our students only needed the scribe for wordy answers, as he could write numbers and simple symbols clearly.

Could you have a sheet with all possible symbols on that the student could point to?

I know it's unusual to have a scribe for Maths. However, is the scribe able to write symbols or does the candidate have to explain exactly how to write them?
