The UK electronic information Group (UKeiG) is pleased to announce a one-day course on "Research Data Management for Information Professionals" at CILIP's headquarters in the heart of London on Wednesday May 23rd, 2018. This course provides a practical and informative introduction to the role of librarians and information professionals in supporting Research Data Management (RDM). Who should attend? Information professionals and librarians with an interest/responsibility for supporting research, especially RDM, or any professional wishing to keep their skills up to date in this important field. Course outline and topics There is an increasing understanding that data collected during research needs to be managed more carefully. It is in researchers’ own interests to do so, and increasingly funders also mandate data planning. The scale, diversity and fragility of digital data make this challenging. Universities are beginning to develop a support infrastructure that will help improve research data management. Some libraries are already beginning to play a key role in defining and delivering this infrastructure. The course introduces the essential skills required by librarians and information professionals to support all stages of the research process. Topics covered include: *Research Data Management – what it is and why it is important *Understanding research and researchers, including in-depth case studies *The research data lifecycle *Research Data Services overview, with in-depth discussion of gathering requirements, Data Management Planning and advocacy *Learning more and keeping up-to-date By the end of the course you will be able to: *Describe the strategic context within which RDM has appeared on the LIS agenda and the key drivers and issues for researchers *Outline the research process and reflect on the nature of research data *Analyse an institutional Research data policy *Evaluate a Data Management Plan *Discuss the range of Research Data Services *Reflect on the arguments for RDM that researchers respond to *Reflect on the relevance of RDM to your current role *Identify resources to find out more Course leaders: Andrew Cox is a senior lecturer at the Information School, University of Sheffield and led the RDMRose Project. His research interests include virtual community, social media and library responses to technology. He coordinates Sheffield’s MSc in Digital Library Management. Eddy Verbaan is Head of Library Research Support at Sheffield Hallam University. He established a Research Data Management infrastructure at Sheffield Hallam University and worked as a Research Associate at the Information School, The University of Sheffield, on RDM-related projects. He has a PhD in history and an MSc in Digital Library Management.
