The research will explore if students have gender-specific expectations to their teachers and therefore judge male and female teachers’ performances differently, although such differences may not be reflected in observable teaching behaviours. A better understanding of the social knowledge and mental processes students apply to judge teaching quality on quantitative scales can help devise evaluation methods that minimise implicit biases, improve gender equality and enhance accuracy, and thus the comparability of teaching evaluations across teachers, faculties and universities.
This exciting scholarship will draw on qualitative research methodologies and statistical analyses, and will involve investigations of teaching at different faculties. If desired, the successful applicant will also have access to software for video-based behavioural coding and online surveys, and they may also wish to conduct semi-structured interviews.
